About TUR

TUR logoTheunderrepresented.com is a project that was conceived by, created by, and is maintained by Joseph and Pamela VanderVeer.  The intention of this project is to facilitate political self-advocacy for Americans with disabilities.

It is our belief that as the disability community continues to struggle for deinstitutionalization, community inclusion, and basic opportunities in our society, it is of growing importance that each of us in the community sound off to our elected officials ourselves and be self-advocates (activists) rather than rely on others to advocate for us.

Who are Joe and Pam?

Joe and Pam
A brief biography:

Joe is a 38-year-old native Oregonian.  At the age of four, he sustained a TBI in a car accident that left him clinically dead at the scene for 15 minutes and in a coma for six weeks.  Upon waking from the coma, a diagnosis was given of spastic quadriparesis... or essentially CP...

Pam is a 40-year-old woman who was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts.  Pam has type 1 osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) which means that at 4'2" tall, she is an adorable "little person" and she is no stranger to the issues facing those with disabilities in our society...

Joe and Pam met each other at Arizona State University in the fall of 1989.  At that time, Pam was beginning her masters degree in flute performance  and Joe was continuing his undergraduate work in psychology and business.

It wasn't long before they began dating and in August of 1992, they became husband-and-wife.  Shortly thereafter, they moved back to Portland, Oregon where they still reside today.
